Speak & Write Srilanka Malay - Lesson 1.

The aim of these lessons are to get the reader to practice the Malay that we know. So please answer the question in your known Malay. Corrections; suggestions and introduction of new words will be given after you have answered the questions. It will be simplified in keeping with what we know.

Example:

Question: What is your name? (Siapa nama anda?)

Answer : Seppe nama Tuan Ariff. (I'm sure this will be how some of you will answer the question)

Comment: The answer is correct. But "seppe" is an abbreviation of two words. "Saya punya" - So in other words you are saying "Saya punya nama Tuan Ariff"

(I possess the name Tuan Ariff).

The common way of answering the question in the Malay Countries would be -

"Nama saya Tuan Ariff" - Please note how the objective "Nama" is spoken first and is followed by qualifying it by "saya Tuan Ariff". THIS IS HOW THE LANGUAGE IS SPOKEN AND WRITTEN GRAMMARICALLY IN THE MALAY LANGUAGE.

Also note that the word "siapa" is used when you ask about people; but "apa" is used when you ask about things and animals.

Example: "Siapa nama anda? (What is your name?)

"Apa binathan itu? (What is that animal?)
